In a multiverse context you will have groups of alternate times grouped around certain ideas. Even though you will be on your actual timeline, you are surround by many alternate timelines. Your parallel timelines as a whole can be grouped by such factors as locations, homes, contacts and professions.
This is a hard concept to understand as you only directly experience your actual timeline. These other counterfactual timelines are foreign to that timeline. Certain groupings (series) of these timelines are more foreign or distant from your actual timeline that others often because they are based on a 'spit' from your actual timeline that occured many years ago.
The timeline we are on is part of many series' of related timelines. These series can be used to define our timeline and differentiate it from other lines. Even after a divergence (split) there are future commonalities among the resulting timelines. The closer to the present moment one comes, the narrower the group of timelines your current timeline belongs too. At your birth, looking towards the past your timeline has solidified - what happened - happened. As long as you live, versions of you are parts of the multitude of future branching timelines. Those independent versions of yourself can be referred to as your counterparts.
All timelines are connected by branch points though in the case of humanity the initial branch point may be 10,000 or more years ago at the birth of civilization or as late as 2002 with a major branching would have occured if the United States government had decided not to invade Iraq. After the split the timelines continue to progress with perhaps slight differences from their closes neighboring timelines and greater differences from more distant timelines.
Events define your timeline as you travel from one event to the next.
