Your reputation comprises the ideas other people and groups have regarding you. Slander and libel [defamation] can damage that reputation as well as perceptions of unmoral or unethical actions. The perception of impropriety can be even more damaging than any actual impropriety. Credibility can be lost when words and actions get out of harmony.
Your reputation is also built on your social affiliations. Your name will resonate with other names in the minds of others. You can be seen in relationship to your family. Sometimes a person will intentionally attach themselves to their family's reputation. Social class is another component of reputation.
You will also be perceived stereotypically by others. They will 'tag' you with stereotypes. They will group you into what they already know. On occasion this may mean they demonize you. They will stereotype you based on their interactions with you and your story, your family's story and other stories. Sometimes you can 'position' yourself in regards to a story or others will position you in regards to the stories they know. Because of the depth of all that is going on, this positioning is often very simplistic.
